According to legend, Buddha summoned all animals to witness his departure from earth, but only twelve turned up to say goodbye. In order of arrival these were the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rooster, dog and finally the pig. To reward the animals, Buddha gave the name of each animal to each year of the lunar cycle, in the same order of their appearance.
The Chinese lunar calendar is one of the most ancient in the world, and began more than 4,500 years ago in the reign of the Yellow Emperor, Huang Di. The complete cycle is sixty years made up of five cycles of metal, water, wood, fire and earth, and twelve cycles of animals. Thus a sixtieth birthday is always an excuse for a major celebration!
This year, 2010, marks the Year of The Tiger, and those born in 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, 1926, 1914 are said to be warm-hearted,daring, passionate and impulsive. They are also independent and optimistic.

Chinese New Year 2010
This most colourful and joyous of Chinese festivals heralds a continuous round of celebrations and good food. According to legend, a wild beast always appeared in the middle of the cold dark winters, terrorising and killing villagers. The inhabitants finally realised the beast was afraid of bright lights, loud noises, and the colour red. So they kept their houses brightly lit, painted some furniture red [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and let off firecrackers. This did the trick and the beast never appeared again.
